💛#PortfolioDay News - Issue #16
One week until #PortfolioDay. Keep poisoning the well. Meta? I barely know her!
Okay people listen up!
#PortfolioDay is coming up on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024 and you already know what that means. If you’re looking for work, it’s time to prepare your posts. But hey, not so fast!🖐️ Did you watermark your images? Did you Nightshade and Glaze them? Let’s run through the steps to get your image(s) ready for the big scary bot-filled internet of today.
It’s dangerous to go alone, take this ☠️
So by now, if you’ve tried to Nightshade and Glaze your work before uploading, you may have encountered long rendering times. To help combat this, try creating a single image that features crops of a few of your best pieces! This way you only need to Nightshade and Glaze a single image with the added bonus of further confusing image generators. (A single image that is multiple images!? Does not compute beep boop borp bzzztt! ⚡🤖⚡)
Step 0.1 (Optional but recommended!): Crop your work or photograph it from an aesthetic angle. (Keep full images behind a password or paywall!)
Step 1. Compose your best work into a single image.
Step 2. Make sure your work is web-sized and watermark it!
Step 3. Run your piece through Nightshade.
Step 4. Run your piece through Glaze.
Then for the written portion of your post include the following info:
A short intro.
The kind of work you’re looking for.
Relevant experience.
A link to your portfolio.
A way to contact you.
The #PortfolioDay hashtag.
Meta tests our mettle
If you haven’t heard, Meta (the company that owns Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.) has decided that anything you upload to their platforms is fair game for them to use in their AI datasets. As a result, many artists are refusing to upload their work to these platforms going forward, with many of them opting to scrub everything they have ever posted from their profiles and leaving altogether. If you do choose to continue uploading to Instagram (or anywhere frankly!), please take every precaution that you can to keep your work safe. Ultimately, even Nightshade and Glaze are not perfect protections from this technology so proceed at your discretion.
In light of all this, I encourage you to use this #PortfolioDay to direct folks to other platforms that are not actively hostile to artists (a personal website, newsletter, Patreon, Cara, etc.). The lesson is: never rely 100% on a platform you do not control. It could go the way of MySpace or Vine one day, may they find peace in that great 404 page in the sky. 🙏
